Baptism is the first of three sacraments of initiation and it is therefore a person’s entry into the life of Christ. The first Baptisms were for adults, but probably very early in the history of the church infants were brought for Baptism.
Holy Communion is the sacrament in which Jesus is made sacramentally present as a sign of his love for us. It is received within the context of the Mass when the saving sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is remembered and when we sacramentally enter into it.
Reconciliation used to be called Confession. The new name gives a better understanding of the meaning of the sacrament. The symbol of this sacrament is the laying on of hands together with the words of absolution. This action sacramentally makes real the loving forgiveness of the Father, and the penitent is reconciled with Him.
Confirmation is the sacrament which completes the process of initiation into the Catholic Church. It is undertaken when a Christian is sufficiently mature to take the step into full membership of the Church. The sacrament is a gifting with the power of the Spirit to love. The Spirit is symbolised in two ways – the laying on of hands and praying for the Spirit’s power, and being sealed with the oil of chrism to strengthen the new member to live out his or her Christian calling.
Marriage Care provides a Preparing Together for Couples Marrying in the Catholic Church course. The course is designed to complement the preparation you may receive within your local place of worship, in addition to the material Marriage Care shares with you about building and sustaining relationships. The course is usually on Saturdays or over a series of evenings. It is enjoyable, revealing and rewarding.
Anointing Of the Sick is the Sacrament which brings the grace of Jesus’ healing power to those who are seriously ill or aged or preparing for a major operation. Jesus exercised a powerful healing ministry, and his power is shared by the minister of this sacrament through the grace of God and the authority of his Church.
